Naruto ist in der Lage diesen abzulenken, sodass er nicht mehr seine ganze Kraft auf die Aufrechterhaltung des Gefängnisses richtig.

Der Kampf gegen den Dämon des versteckten Nebels hat Kakashi sehr geschwächt. Deswegen muss der Lehrer die Reise zu Tazuna für kurze Zeit unterbrechen. Seine Schüler hingegen dürfen sich nicht ausruhen, denn diese müssen sich einer weiteren Trainingsaufgabe stellen. Die Aufgabe besteht darin, einen Baum hinaufzuklettern, ohne die Hände zu benutzen.

Der junge Ninja verbringt sehr viel Zeit im Wald und probiert sein Chakra so zu fokussieren, sodass er ohne Füße einen Baum herauf klettern kann. Während seines Trainings im Wald begegnet Naruto einem faszinierenden Mädchen, welches sich schnell als Junge herausstellt.

Der Kampf zwischen Zabuza gegen Kakashi und „Team 7" geht weiter. Dabei versucht Zabuza den Kampf zu gewinnen, indem er Tazunas Tochter Tsunami von Waraji und Zouri entführen lässt. Ihr Sohn Inari muss hilflos zusehen, bis er sich an Narutos Worte erinnert. Zugleich erscheint Naruto. Mit seiner Hilfe können sie die Mutter befreien.

Die Söldner von dem Reederei Besitzer Gato sind nicht so leicht zu besiegen, wie anfangs von Kakashi und „Team 7", gedacht. Wie sich herausstellt, verfügt Haku über eine besondere Fähigkeit, welche nur innerhalb seines Clans vererbt wird. Das Kekkei Genkai Hyouton, ermöglicht ihm, Eis zu erzeugen und Fingerzeichen mit nur einer Hand zu formen.

Naruto und Sasuke versuchen immer noch, mit verschiedenen Jutsus, Haku zu besiegen und somit die Brücke zu sichern. Angefeuert werden die zwei Jungs von ihrer Teampartnerin Sakura. Nach Sasukes Jutsu der flammenden Feuerkugel ist Haku zumindest sehr überrascht. Währenddessen beschützt Sensei Kakashi den Brückenbauer Tazuna vor Zabuza Momochi.

Naruto und Sasuke sind sehr erschöpft. Trotzdem müssen sie noch immer gegen den starken Söldner kämpfen. Die Situation wird von einem Schrei eines Mädchens unterbrochen. Auch Kakashi war noch nicht in der Lage seinen Gegner Zabuza zu besiegen. Nach einem kurzen Ablenkungsmanöver will er seinen Schützlingen helfen. Er erkennt, dass er das nicht muss, denn in Naruto erwacht etwas.

Haku wird von Narutos energischem Angriff völlig überrascht. Das erste Mal in seinem Leben glaubt er seinem Herrn nicht zufrieden stellen zu können. Nachdem Provokation nichts hilft, versucht Haku Mitleid bei Naruto zu erzeugen. Er erzählt von seiner schwierigen Kindheit und der ersten Begegnung mit Zabuza. Zabuza hingegen erzählt Kakashi, dass er Haku nur als Werkzeug sieht.

Im Kampf gegen Naruto muss sich Haku schließlich geschlagen geben. Obwohl er besiegt wurde, mischt sich Haku in den Zweikampf zwischen Zabuza und Kakashi ein. Es gelingt Haku Kakashis Raikiri von Zabuza abzuhalten, er muss jedoch mit seinen eigenen Leben bezahlen. Zabuza ist über den Verlust seines Freundes nicht traurig und greift Kakashi erneut an.

Stellvertretend für Zabuza, tritt eine Horde von Gangstern in Erscheinung, welche auch von Gato engagiert wurde.

Der zweite Teil der Chūnin-Auswahlprüfung steht an. In einem Kampf ohne Regeln müssen alle Teams im „Wald des Todes" gegeneinander kämpfen. Zudem scheint die Prüferin Anko Mitarashi noch strenger zu sein, wie der vorherige Prüfer Ibiki. Die Nervosität der übriggebliebenen Teilnehmer steigt mit jeder Minute an.

Die nächste Prüfung im „Wald des Todes" besteht darin, innerhalb von fünf Tagen einen Turm im Zentrum des Prüfungsbereichs zu erreichen. Um die Prüfung zu bestehen, müssen die Teams mindestens zwei unterschiedliche Schriftrollen im Ziel vorzeigen.

Der „Wald des Todes" hat so einige Hindernisse für „Team 7" bereitgestellt. Nachdem es Naruto gelungen ist, einer Riesenschlange zu entkommen, eilt der junge Ninja zu Sakura und Sasuke. Als er diese endlich findet, stellt er mit Entsetzen fest, dass seine Teamkollegen in viel größere Probleme verwickelt sind.

„Team 7" muss sich gegen einen starken Gegner beweisen. Offensichtlich trägt der Gras-Ninja ein dunkles Geheimnis in sich. Dem Gras-Ninja, war es zuvor schon möglich Naruto außer Gefecht zu setzen. Nachdem er Sasuke am Hals verletzt hat, fällt auch dieser bewusstlos zu Boden. Jetzt liegt es an Sakura, den Gras-Ninja im Alleingang zu besiegen.

Naruto und Sasuke konnten den Kampf gegen Orochimaru nicht gewinnen. Beide brechen bewusstlos zusammen. Jetzt liegt es an Sakura, ihre Teammitglieder vor Überfällen der konkurrierenden Teilnehmer zu beschützen. Sakura fühlt sich überfordert, zumal Orochimaru seine Anhänger auf die drei Schüler angesetzt hat.

Aufgrund des Kampfes mit Orochimaru, liegen Naruto und Sasuke immer noch bewusstlos am Boden. Plötzlich sieht sich Sakura gegenüber von drei Gangstern stehen. Sakura ist völlig verzweifelt. Wie soll sie nur drei Gegner im Alleingang besiegen? Was das Mädchen allerdings nicht weiß, Hilfe ist ganz in der Nähe.

Sakura muss sich allein gegen Dosu und Zaku stellen. Zu ihrem Glück beobachtet „Team 10" die ausweglose Situation und beschließt daraufhin Sakura zu helfen. Aus heiterem Himmel erwacht Sasuke aus seiner Bewusstlosigkeit und ist stärker wie nie zuvor. Er stellt sich ebenfalls Dosu und Zaku entgegen.

Auch das dritte Team, „Team 8" hat einige Probleme in der Prüfung. Sie werden Zeuge, wie ein Schüler aus Sunagakure sein mächtiges Jutsu anwendet. Kiba, Shino und Hinata, sind von diesem starken Chakra so eingeschüchtert, sodass sie im Anschluss die Flucht ergreifen.

Die fünf Tage für das Bestehen der zweiten Prüfung laufen ab. Langsam macht sich bei Naruto, Sakura und Sasuke Frustration breit. Doch als sie Kabuto begegnen, macht dieser ihnen neuen Mut. Daraufhin begeben sich die Teamkollegen zum Turm im Zentrum des Prüfungsbereichs. Dort, nach der Meinung von Kabuto, hätte das Team die besten Möglichkeiten noch an die benötigte Schriftrolle zu kommen.

Denn Shino kann Insekten in Zakus Körper befehligen. Die Insekten können das Chakra von Zaku aufsaugen. Des Weiteren gibt es ein Aufeinandertreffen von Sensei Kakashi und Orochimaru.

Im Zweikampf gegen Temari ist Tenten hoffnungslos unterlegen. Egal was Tenten versucht, Temari kann die Angriffe von ihrer Rivalin mit ihrem Riesenfächer abwehren. Und so geht Temari als Siegerin aus dem Kampf hervor. Im Anschluss stehen sich Shikamaru Nara und Kin Tsuchi gegenüber. Derweil kann es Naruto kaum noch erwarten gegen seinen Kontrahenten anzutreten.

Endlich ist es soweit. Naruto muss in den Ausscheidungskämpfen gegen Kiba Inuzuka antreten. Kiba tritt das Duell mitsamt seinem Nin-Ken Akamaru, einem speziellen Hund der Shinobi, an. Der Chūnin aus Konohagakure und Klassenkamerad von Naruto setzt im Kampf alle erdenklichen Tricks und Trümpfe ein. Dadurch ist es Kiba möglich, den Kampf gegen Naruto zunehmen zu dominieren.

Mit seinen Tricks und Trümpfen ist Kiba klar im Vorteil gegenüber Naruto. Es scheint, als würde Kiba das Duell zu seinen Gunsten entscheiden. Durch einen Zufall kann Naruto das Blatt gerade noch wenden. Zudem hat der junge Ninja noch ein Ass im Ärmel, welches er erst gegen Ende des Wettkampfes einsetzen möchte.

Die letzten Zweikämpfe, für die Qualifikation der dritten Runde der Chūnin-Auswahlprüfung stehen an. Gespannt warten alle Anwesenden auf den nächsten Kampf. Und als die Rivalen bekannt gegeben werden, halten alle Anwesenden gespannt den Atem an. Denn die kleine schüchterne Hinata Hyūga muss gegen das Mitglied von „Team 9", Neji Hyūga antreten.

Immer noch stehen sich Hinata Hyūga und Neji Hyūga in einem Zweikampf gegenüber. Allen Anwesenden ist klar, dass das Mädchen gegen den stärksten Ninja aus dem Hyūga-Clan keine Chance hat. Trotzdem kann Hinata alle durch ihr Durchhaltevermögen überraschen. Denn ihr Chakrasystem ist nach unzähligen Angriffen lahmgelegt, jedoch steht das Mädchen immer wieder auf.

In den Ausscheidungskämpfen müssen Rock Lee und der unheimliche Shinobi aus Sunagakure Gaara gegeneinander antreten. Die Mitglieder von „Team 7" sind überzeugt, dass Rock Lee den Kampf für sich entscheiden wird. Allerdings kann Rock Lee weder Fähigkeiten im Nin- noch in Gen-Jutsu-Bereich aufweisen. Lediglich das Tai-Jutsu beherrscht der junge Ninja.

Zunächst kann Rock Lee den Zweikampf gegen Gaara dominieren. Bis zu dem Moment als Gaara eine Rüstung aus Sand anlegt. Rock Lee beschließt eine Technik anzuwenden, welche er von Sensei Maito Gai erlernte. Das Öffnen der Inneren Tore ist allerdings eine verbotene Technik, denn dieses Jutsu schadet den Anwender. Rock Lee kann eindrucksvoll zeigen, dass er diese Technik beherrscht.

Im Kampf gegen Gaara ist Rock Lee imstande eines der schwierigsten Jutsus anzuwenden. Das Öffnen der Inneren Tore beschränkt den Chakra-Fluss im Körper und kann die eigenen Kräfte steigern. Zudem kann der Gegner, aufgrund der Schnelligkeit des Jutsus, sich kaum verteidigen. Rock Lee kann die ersten fünf Tore öffnen. Um Rock Lee zu stoppen, zerquetscht Gaara seinen linken Arm und ein Bein.

Nachdem Kampf gegen Yoroi Akado, liegt Sasuke immer noch verletzt im Krankenhaus. Sensei Kakashi erkennt die steigende Gefahr, welche durch das Mal des Fluches an Sasukes Hals, droht. Derweil schmiedet Orochimaru weiterhin seine finsteren Pläne. Lediglich Kabuto Yakushi durchschaut seine Pläne und wird somit zu einer großen Bedrohung für Orochimaru.

Although his comrades are defeated, Jin puts his final plan in motion by using Gaara to revive Seimei. To do this, he traps Gaara in a metal sphere that starts draining his chakra.
