Am 20. Mai startet Men, der neue Film von Ex Machina- und Auslöschung-Regisseur Alex Garland in den Kinos - zumindest in den USA. Der dortigen Presse wurde das Werk nun gezeigt und wie üblich trudeln jetzt die ersten Kurzmeinungen via Twitter ein (siehe unten). Bislang scheint der Film gut bis sehr gut anzukommen. Gelobt werden vor allem die Darsteller, sowie die Surrealität des Werks, welches anscheinend ein Ende parat hält, mit dem wohl nicht jeder etwas anfangen können wird.
Die Hauptrolle spielt die Oscar nominierte Irin Jessie Buckley (I'm Thinking of Ending Things). Derweil übernimmt Rory Kinnear(Penny Dreadful) fast alle anderen Rollen, zumindest wenn man dem Trailer Glauben schenkt. In der offiziellen Besetzungsliste finden sich aber noch zwei weitere Namen, nämlich Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London) und Gayle Rankin (GLOW). Nach einer persönlichen Tragödie zieht sich Harper allein in die wunderschöne englische Landschaft zurück, in der Hoffnung, einen Ort der Heilung zu finden. Aber jemand oder etwas aus den umliegenden Wäldern scheint sie zu verfolgen. Was als schwelendes Grauen beginnt, entwickelt sich zu einem ausgewachsenen Albtraum, der von ihren dunkelsten Erinnerungen und Ängsten bevölkert wird.

Alex Garland’s MEN is, of course, psychologically terrifying but funnier than expected thanks to a versatile Rory Kinnear. Jessie Buckley continues to amaze. MEN: Alex Garland's most nakedly horror movie, and also his weirdest. A surreal folk horror film that starts off as an unsettling home invasion thriller and gets stranger (and gorier) from there. I loved it?? Audiences will hate it!
MEN is absolutely bonkers. Top-notch performances from Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear. That having been said, it kind of falls apart for me and the pieces didn't come together in a way I would have liked. Men is not my favorite Alex Garland movie, but it most certainly does extend his impressive streak of making complex, fascinating, and layered genre stories that fuck with your head for days.
