Während noch vor einiger Zeit 20th Century Fox  mit vollem Einsatz an zwei Sequels zum Sci-Fi-Hit "Independence Day" von Regisseur Roland Emmerich fest hielt, scheint nun das Studio etwas zurückzurudern: So wurde jetzt bestätigt, dass uns doch nur ein weiterer Film erreicht und zwar am 24.06.2016. In einem Interview verriet Produzent Dean Devlin, warum sich der Plan doch noch geändert hat:

"We decided just to do one first to make sure that people like where we're going," he said. "If that works well, there's an ability to do some world building which would be really fun and interesting to do. I think Roland and everybody felt, let's just make sure 20 years later that people still are interested. I think in our case, we started to feel that maybe we were being a little bit arrogant by assuming that we could do two movies. We said you know what, let's scale it down. Let's first make sure that it works for everyone."

So will man nun doch erst einmal sehen, wie das Publikum auf eine Rückkehr nach 20 Jahren reagiert. Sollte es zum Erfolg führen, wird die Welt weiter ausgebaut, was sehr viel Spaß machen würde und interessant wäre. Aber aktuell sind zwei Filme dann doch etwas zu viel. 

Weiterhin bestätigte er noch, dass es bereits mehrere Treffen mit Will Smith gab. Doch weiterhin gibt es von ihm keine Zusage für ein Sequel.
