Kritik

„Es sind fremdartige Wesen. Primitive Lebensformen, die andersartig sind, als alle uns bekannten Tiere oder Pflanzen. Im Laufe der Zeit gaben ihnen die Menschen aus Respekt und Ehrfurcht den Namen Mushi.“

Mit diesen Worten beginnt „Mushishi“ (蟲師). Dabei ist das japanische Wort Mushi (蟲) nicht wörtlich als Insekt zu verstehen, sondern als „Naturell des Lebens“. Sie können nur von sehr wenigen Menschen gesehen werden, die sich häufig als sogenannte Mushishi dem Studium der Mushi widmen. Um diese Wesen dreht sich alles in Yuki Urushibaras Mangaserie, die von 1999 bis 2008 in 10 Bänden veröffentlicht wurde und 2005 eine Animeadaption erhielt.

Die in der Serie dargestellte Welt ähnelt Japan zwischen der Edo- und der Meiji-Periode, also gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Neben der Existenz der Mushi ist einer der wichtigsten Unterschiede zur Realität, dass Japan keinen ausländischen Einflüssen ausgesetzt war. Episodisch werden die Erlebnisse des Mushishi Ginko erzählt, der das Land bereist und Menschen hilft, denen unterschiedlichste Mushi Probleme bereiten. Er selbst ist zu diesem Lebensstil gezwungen, da er zu einem der seltenen Menschen gehört, die diese Wesen anziehen. Dadurch kann er nie lange am selben Ort verweilen, da sich neben den vielen harmlosen Mushi auch solche ansammeln, die den Menschen schaden. Seine Erscheinung mit den weißen Haaren, die sein linkes Auge verdecken ist gespenstisch. Dazu raucht er ständig, da der Rauch die Mushi zumindest für einige Zeit fernhält.

Die Geschichten sind unvergleichlich und können sich mit den größten Erzählern der Weltliteratur messen. Jede Episode erzählt eine in sich abgeschlossene Geschichte mit eigenen Charakteren, Themen und Konflikten. Und was Yuki Urushibara hier in 25 Minuten erzählt ist mehr als viele in einem ganzen Spielfilm transportieren können. Man lernt als Zuschauer auf Ginkos Reisen viele Figuren kennen und jede dieser Figuren hat eine ganz eigene Persönlichkeit und Probleme. Gerade bei den unterschiedlichen Mushi war Urushibaras Fantasie keinerlei Grenzen gesetzt. Ginko trifft einen Jungen, dessen Zeichnungen Realität werden, hilft einem Mann einen seltsamen Wald zu verlassen oder heilt ein Mädchen, das nicht im Sonnenlicht leben kann. Dabei erinnern einige Mushi durchaus an Hayao Miyazakis Stil, indem sie als viskose, scheinbar lebendige Flüssigkeiten dargestellt werden. Andere hingegen nehmen eher die Formen von Einzellern oder Gliederfüßern an oder sind gänzlich frei erdacht. Die einen von den Mushi verursachten Erkrankungen gleichen realen Krankheiten, andere sind von rein spiritueller Natur. Ginko agiert  jedenfalls wie ein Arzt, der durch das Land reist, Menschen heilt und dabei das Wissen über die unterschiedlichen Mushi erweitert. Das Traurige daran ist, dass er durch seine eigene Erkrankung zu diesem heimatlosen Leben gezwungen ist, während er jedem anderen hilft, kann er nur sich selbst nicht heilen.Jedenfalls ist die Autorin unumstritten eine der größten Erzählerinnen unserer Zeit.

Die Serie ist eine von Anfang bis Ende stimmige Komposition aus Geschichte, Bildern und Musik. Jede einzelne der 26 Episoden hat ein eigenes Thema und eine abgeschlossene Geschichte. Dabei wird alles in dieser Folge farblich aufeinander abgestimmt. Kein einziges Bild ist unnötig oder fehl am Platze und man merkt, dass jede Szene mehrfach durchdacht wurde. Bei der Gestaltung der Figuren hat man sich an der klassischen japanischen Malerei orientiert, die sich genauso wie die wunderschönen Landschaftsbilder fließend in das Gesamtbild einfügen. Dazu kommt die wahrlich perfekte musikalische Untermalung von Toshio Masuda. Beginnend beim Opening „The Sore Feet Song“ von dem Iren Ally Kerr, dass träumerisch den Zuschauer zu Beginn der Folge in diese faszinierende Welt hineinzieht. Der Score hingegen überzeugt häufig auch durch seine Abwesenheit, wird aber genau an den richtigen Stellen eingespielt. Dabei kommen ausschließlich traditionelle japanische Instrumente zum Einsatz, die die Atmosphäre der Serie gnadenlos gut unterstreichen. Für jede Folge hat Toshio Masuda ein eigenes stimmiges Ending komponiert und bei kaum einer Serie wird man ein solches Verlangen verspüren während der End Credits jeder (!) Folge sitzen zu bleiben, die Augen zu schließen und einfach nur die traumhafte Musik zu genießen.

Fazit

Mushishi“ ist eine Ode an eines der schönsten Länder dieser Erde. Eine unwirkliche Reise durch eine fantasievolle Welt, die der unseren vielleicht gar nicht so unähnlich ist. Eine geniale Komposition aus Geschichte, Charakteren, Bildern und Musik. Perfekt in jeder Hinsicht.
